Private Braces for Children.

A healthy smile for a happy child

Orthodontics isn’t just about improving your child’s smile. It’s about making sure their smile is healthy and free from potential problems. Braces for children are a great way to prevent the need for complex treatment in their teenage years.

What are the types of braces?

Here are some of the types of braces we work with at our private orthodontic practice:

Removable appliances: These appliances use wires and springs to gradually move teeth through gentle pressure. Commonly used by younger patients, they provide the convenience of removability for sport, music practise and brushing or flossing.

Functional appliances: These devices are ideal for younger patients to help improve their bite. They can ensure that the jaws grow properly, and provide facial symmetry and harmony.

Fixed appliances: These appliances use small brackets affixed to the teeth and linked together through orthodontic wires called archwires. Held together with small elastics, this system provides pressure to align the patient’s smile.

To progress through treatment with fixed braces, patients will come to our practice for regular adjustment appointments where their Specialist Orthodontist will place precise bends in their archwires to guide the teeth into the desired positions.

Braces for children are most often used to straighten crooked, crowded or protruding teeth, close gaps between teeth, and correct the bite so the top and bottom teeth meet when the mouth is closed. Straight teeth, as well as looking better, mean that your child will be able to care for their teeth and gums more easily, helping to avoid issues from occurring later in life.

There’s no set age for a child’s first orthodontist visit, but early checks can be a good idea to spot potential issues. Children often start to get dental problems when their first grown up teeth start to come through and this can be a good point to start early interceptive treatment if needed.

This is a concern for a lot of young people and the short answer for this is occasionally. Any slight discomfort that occurs after the initial fitting or subsequent tightening of the braces should wear off within a day or two.

We recommend trying to avoid foods with a lot of sugar content, as well as sticky or chewy foods that could potentially get stuck in the braces.

The amount of time spent in braces will vary, depending on the individual patient, because every smile responds differently to treatment. Your child’s orthodontist will be able to give you an estimate of the treatment length during their initial assessment.

Discuss the various treatment options with your child and talk through what they can expect before their braces are fitted. Focus on the benefits of the braces and listen to their concerns. Our friendly team here in Aberdeen will also take time to listen to their concerns and explain the treatment thoroughly.
